Professional Practice (Internship) in Safety

Practical experience in the field is an essential element of the Safety Program at Illinois State University. All Safety majors are required to complete a Professional Practice experience prior to graduation. They will have the opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-world problems and solutions.

Students begin preparing for their Professional Practice the semester prior to their actual start date. This allows the student the opportunity to develop a resume, practice interviewing skills and research potential sites. Each student will then accept an offer from a site according to individual career goals and location preference. Professional Practice opportunities are available during all semesters but are more commonly done during the summer semester.

Students should complete pertinent course work for desired type of Professional Practice (for exceptions, see coordinator).  Students must complete a minimum of 9 weeks in the field for 9 credits.  However, students are encouraged to complete 12 weeks in the field (12 credits) to gain a more complete experience.  All sites and student participation must meet the approval of the Program Director.

To be eligible for Professional Practice, Safety students must meet the following requirements:

  • Senior status, Safety major
  • Minimum Major Grade Point Average of 2.0
  • HSC 248, 271, 359, 381
  • To be eligible for Professional Practice in construction, students must also have taken HSC 272

To maximize Professional Practice success, students are encouraged to complete all required course work before starting this experience. The Safety Program utilizes over 130 employers in governmental agencies, consulting, manufacturing, agriculture, insurance and construction.

Junior status students should discuss their Professional Practice goals at any time with the Program Director. Students wishing to do out of state or overseas Professional Practice should be in contact with the Program Director at least one year prior to start date.
