What is Safety?

The Safety Program offers both a major and a minor degree. Built upon a foundation in the sciences, the Safety Program emphasizes the technical and managerial aspects of occupational safety to prevent accidents, reduce losses and improve productivity.

Safety professionals use engineering and management techniques to protect people, property and the environment. They focus on a proactive approach to reduce the occurrence and impact of adverse events. They assist in the design of facilities, equipment, products and processes aimed at reducing losses, and improving productivity and profitability.

Safety professionals conduct safety training, develop written documents and specifications, interpret legal requirements, perform cost benefit analyses, and conduct investigations, audits and inspections. Graduates are prepared to serve as safety professionals in manufacturing plants, insurance companies, construction firms, educational institutions, agricultural operations, and governmental agencies at the national, state, and local levels.

Professional certification in safety practice is associated with advancement and salary increases. While there are more than 200 credentials/certifications available in various aspects of safety, health and environmental practice, only about a dozen of these are nationally accredited.

Accredited certifications commonly attained by Illinois State safety graduates include:

  • Certified Safety Professional
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician

Safety graduates are eligible to pursue the examinations leading to these certifications after gaining professional safety experience.  Additional details on certification can be found at Certified Safety ProfessionalOccupational Health and Safety Technologists and Construction Health and Safety Technician.
