Professional Practice (Internships) in Health Education

Practical experience is an integral part of the Health Education curriculum at Illinois State University. An internship (professional practice) experience is scheduled for nine to twelve weeks at 40 hours per week. The experience occurs anytime during the year but most commonly during the spring. This experience allows the student the opportunity to provide practical health education experience in community settings.

During the professional practice experience the student must apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to an actual setting. The student assumes responsibilities for carrying out work assignments and special projects while receiving guidance and evaluation from a field supervisor and program faculty.

The final grade is based on evidence of personal skills and knowledge of health education, decision-making ability, communication skills, initiative, punctuality and completion of projects.

The Health Education program at Illinois State utilizes over 150 professional practice sites in Illinois and other states. Students are encouraged to identify a professional practice site that matches a personal area of interest or geographical preference.
