Practical experience in the field is an essential element of the Environmental Health Program at Illinois State University. All Environmental Health majors are required to complete a Professional Practice experience prior to graduation. They will have the opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-world problems and solutions.
Students begin preparing for their Professional Practice the semester prior to their actual start date. This allows the student the opportunity to develop a resume, practice interviewing skills and research potential sites. Each student will then accept an offer from a site according to individual career goals and location preference. Professional Practice opportunities are available during all semesters but are more commonly done during the summer semester.
To be eligible for Professional Practice, Environmental Health students must meet the following requirements:
To maximize Professional Practice success, students are encouraged to complete all course work before starting this experience. The Environmental Health Program utilizes over 160 employers in governmental agencies, consulting, manufacturing, agriculture, and public health.
Junior status students should discuss their Professional practice goals at any time with the Coordinator. Students wishing to do out of state or overseas should be in contact with the coordinator at least one year prior to start date.
