Honors in Health Sciences

Students in the Department of Health Sciences who are pursuing University Honors may also qualify for Departmental Honors. The criteria for this distinction are presented here. As described by our honors students, the benefits of Departmental Honors are many and varied.  


Admission Requirements


To be considered for HSC Departmental Honors, the candidate must:

  1. be a declared major in Medical Laboratory Science, Environmental Health, Health Education, Health Information Management, or Safety
  2. have established and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and a major GPA of at least 3.5
  3. have completed at least 30 credit hours
  4. be a member of the University Honors Program
  5. complete an orientation and planning meeting with the Departmental Honors Coordinator in Health Sciences.

Program Requirements


To graduate with Departmental Honors, the Health Sciences student must complete the following, in addition to all graduation requirements:

  1. have a cumulative GPA of 3.5
  2. have a major GPA of 3.5
  3. have 12 credit hours of honors work in Health Sciences, distributed among at least two of the following options:
    • Honors Undergraduate Research
    • Honors Independent Study (HSC 299)
    • Honors Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (HSC 291)
    • In-course Honors.
Students will initiate honors projects with faculty. For in-course honors, the student and faculty member will work together to propose modifications in the course requirements that will demonstrate exceptional achievement.



Suggested Modifications in Course Requirements


  1. Developing a project related to course purpose and objectives.
  2. Critiquing agreed upon material.
  3. Interviewing professionals related to course substance and reporting findings.
  4. Completing a field-trip related to course substance and reporting experience.
  5. Significantly increasing the depth of a standard course assignment (5 minute presentation becomes 15 minute presentation).
  6. Participating in Undergraduate Research Symposium.
