Majoring in School Health Education, or any secondary edcuation program, is similar to a double major because you have to complete requirements in your content area (health), and in professional development (curriculum and instruction). It is a lot to keep track of. This page offers tips and resources to help you stay organized as you complete the School Health program.
Tips for Success:
1. Bookmark the following website and use it frequently: http://www.coe.ilstu.edu/teacheredcenter/.
This is the website for the Lauby Teacher Education Center located in DeGarmo Hall 056. From this website, you can access complete information about your Performance Based Assessment Requirements, Student Teaching, certification, and your progress toward meeting these requirements.
2. Complete requirements, tests, orientations, etc. as early as possible. In teacher education, it is risky to leave anything until the last minute.
3. Choose to complete the two courses that are required to gain certification in Middle Level education (PSY 302 and C&I 233.01)
4. Complete a long term plan of study early in your career at ISU.
FAQ in School Health Education
Q: Am I required to have a minor?
A: School Health Education majors are required to complete a second area of teaching content. This can take the form of a TE minor or an endorsement. Good choices are PE, Family & Consumer Sciences, and General Sciences. Check out the endorsement worksheets to see what is involved in in completing an endorsement.
Q: Do I have to take the Content Test in my major and in my minor/endorsement?
A: Yes. Some students choose to take them at the same time. Others prefer to separate them. Either way, you need to have them successfully completed prior to student teaching.
Q: Can I student teach in the school I graduated from?
A: No. This would create a potential conflict of interest. We will do our best to accommodate your interest and your geographic needs for student teaching, but in the end, there are no guarantees made when it comes to where you will be placed.
